The Origin of the Bernini Angel Statue
One of Bernini’s last major projects was the Angels of the Ponte Sant’Angelo in Rome. This set of angel sculptures, planned and executed by Bernini, totaled eight angels, later increased to ten, and was designed for Pope Clement IX to decorate the Aelius Bridge in ancient Rome, the main link between the Vatican and Rome. Leading sculptors of the time were chosen to carve individual statues of the angels, each holding an instrument of torture from the Passion of Christ.
